MyPressi Twist Review Step by Step Category: Espresso Machines / Tags: / Comments Off

A handheld espresso maker? It’s hard to believe that we’ve come this far, but it’s true. The Mypressi Twist is a sophisticated piece of technology that allows you to easily (with a bit of practice) make espresso shots from a small, easy to clean, handheld espresso maker. Mypressi was nice enough to send us one of these contraptions to test out for ourselves and we will be sad to see it go. (Actually, we are totally purchasing this because it’s too cool too not own, so it’s not really going anywhere.)

parts

These are the parts we are using for ground coffee. The CO2 cartridge is already in the bottom.

When you first purchase the Mypressi Twist, there are a lot of parts that come with it. One package includes:

1 x Pressurized double-shot (14-21g) basket
1 x Standard double-shot (14-21g) basket
1 x ESE pod adaptor and single-shot (7g) basket
1 x 53mm tamper
4 x 8g N2O pressure cartridges
1 x Travel pouch
1 x Drip-catcher coaster
1 x O-ring replacement kit

Seems like a lot of stuff? Well, it’s not ALL necessary. It depends if you are using E.S.E pods or ground espresso coffee, so don’t be intimidated!

Now let me walk you through how we brewed some fantastic shots. We were using Lavazza Bar Espresso for our first try, but we have tried a few others and it really depends on what you like. Some people prefer Segafredo Casa, others cannot get enough of Lavazza Super Crema, and I’ll get back to you on what I think about Illy Medium Roast Espresso Coffee after I give it a try this afternoon in the Mypressi Twist.

First you have to decide whether you are using E.S.E pods or ground espresso coffee. We chose the ground stuff because we have more options that way, but whatever you have will work! Be sure to use a very finely ground espresso coffee so it can be extracted as quickly as possible since more surface area is showing. Here is an example of coarse grounds (used in drip coffee makers) and fine grounds (used for espresso).
coarse vs fine grinds

pre and post tampSince the Mypressi only requires 2 things to brew the espresso, a CO2 cartridge and hot water, the next thing you want to do is start boiling some water. We used a Bodem Water Kettle because it literally takes less than 3 minutes to get water at the right temperature. While the water is heating we tamp (compact the grinds with about 30 lbs of pressure using the little provided tamp tool) the coffee so it goes from a full basket to a more compact amount.

After you have completed this place the basket in the holder, add your boiling water to the top half. There is a water reservoir, which you will cover with a cap. You’re almost done! Next TWIST (aha! the name makes sense!) the water tank onto the coffee basket and handle.

final cremaLastly, press the trigger button for about 30 seconds over your espresso cup and you will be extracting 2 shots. You will know when it’s done and after you release the trigger there a hissing button that finishes off on top of the espresso and produces the most amazing crema we have ever seen!

Mypressi Twist is an amazing product. It takes a little practice to master the perfect shot of espresso, but seriously, this is an impressive little machine that is sure to intrigue guests and keep you pleased layer after layer of deliciously thick crema.

All the best of luck in your new espresso endeavors. looking to buy a Mypressi Twist?

new_flavia_espresso_200Flavia Coffee is one of the few single serve brands left that hasn’t given into expanding their product line. While this may seem like a downside to the company, they definitely earn their credit for creating a great product and sticking to it. One of the staples in the Flavia Coffee lineup is their Flavia Coffee Espresso Roast. With a stronger (rather than mild) flavor profile, this cup of espresso will certainly hold its taste with the addition of milk and sugar. Using a Flavia Fusion Drink Station Deluxe does not provide as much crema as typically desired, but the Flavia Coffee Espresso Roast is a great base for their cappuccino drinks that can be made by first adding a Flavia Cappuccino/Latte Swirl pack.

The aroma is hearty and earthy. The body isn’t as heavy as I would normally expect from an espresso, but the bitterness is low. This cup has a bit more acidity than normal as well, and you can really taste the deeply roasted beans. In addition, the aftertaste isn’t very potent, which is something I very much enjoy in a cup of coffee.

All in all, the espresso for Flavia coffee is a decent cup, but it may be better when used with the Cappuccino/Latte swirl pack to create a cappuccino. Enjoy your drink no matter how you take it and buy your Flavia coffee at discounted prices online Enjoy!

I found this article on a website I frequent. This stuff will help you appear less like a tourist if you plan on traveling in Italy. Abide by the code! Also, I recently met and Italian while traveling on an airplane and while discussing our “life stories” he mentioned how envious he is of our Starbucks coffee culture. We sit down, enjoy a cup of coffee, socialize. In Italy they order an espresso, down it in one or two gulps while standing at the counter, place the cup down, and leave. Though this seems unusual for us, this is completely normal for them. So here are the ten commandments of true Italian coffee drinkers. Good luck!

Here, then, for those who fancy going native in true Lorenzo of Arabica style, are the Ten Commandments of Il Culto del Caffe.

1 Thou shalt drink only cappuccino, caffe latte, latte macchiato or any milky form of coffee in the morning – and never after a meal. Italians cringe at the thought of all that hot milk hitting a full stomach. An American friend who has lived in Rome for many years continues, knowingly, to break this rule. But she has learnt, at least, to apologise to the barista.

2 Thou shalt not muck around with coffee. Requesting a mint frappuccino in Italy is like asking for a single-malt whisky and lemonade with a swizzle stick in a Glasgow pub. There are but one or two regional exceptions that have the blessing of the general coffee synod. In Naples, you can order un caffe alla nocciola – a frothy espresso with hazelnut cream. In Milan, impress the locals by asking for un marocchino, a sort of upside-down cappuccino, served in a small glass and sprinkled with cocoa powder, hit with a blob of frothed milk, then spiked with a shot of espresso.

3 Which reminds me, thou shalt not use the word espresso. This a technical term in Italian, not an everyday one. Espresso is the default setting and single is the default dose; a single espresso is simply known as un caffe.

4 Thou can order un caffe doppio (a double espresso) if thou likest but be aware that this is not an Italian habit. Italians do drink a lot of coffee but they do so in small, steady doses.

5 Thou shalt head confidently for the bar, call out thine order, even if the barista has his back to you, and pay afterwards at the till.

6 If it’s an airport or station bar or a tourist place where the barista screams “ticket” at thee, thou shalt, if thou can bear the ignominy, pay before thou consumest.

7 Thou shalt not sit down unless thou hast a very good reason. Coffee is a pleasurable drug, but a drug nevertheless, and should be downed in one, standing. Would thou sit down at a pavement table to take thy daily Viagra?

8 Thou shouldst expect thy coffee to arrive at a temperature at which it can be downed immediately as per the previous commandment. If thou preferest burning thy lips and tongue or blowing the froth off thy cappuccino in a vain attempt to cool it down, thou shouldst ask for un caffe bollente.

9 Thou shall be allowed the following variations, and these only, from the Holy Trinity of caffe, cappuccino and caffe latte: caffe macchiato or latte macchiato – an espresso with a dash of milk or a hot milk with a dash of coffee (remember, mornings only); caffe corretto: the Italian builder’s early-morning pick-me-up, an espresso “corrected” with a slug of brandy or grappa; and caffe freddo or cappuccino freddo (iced espresso or cappuccino) – but beware, this usually comes pre-sugared. Thou mayst also ask for un caffe lungo or un caffe ristretto if thou desirest more or less water in thine espresso.

10 Anything else you may have heard is heresy.

cafe la semeuseCafe La Semeuse. If you don’t know this name from the coffee industry, you need to know something. You are missing out! Yes, I hate to push yet another coffee brand in your vocabulary of already over-populated manufacturers, but this is one brand that needs to make its way to the  front of your frontal lobe. Cafe La Semeuse produces what they themselves call “a never bitter coffee.” How is that possible? The selectively chosen, delicate Arabica beans are roasted at higher altitudes, which in turn, allows the beans to be roasted at lower temperatures. Translation? No burt beans, no oily residue, no bitter flavor, and surprising (this is not advertised) minimal aftertaste/coffee breath. (This is huge for us who work closely with our co-workers!)

Look at that beautiful color Classique!

Look at the beautiful color of Classique!

After reading several articles about how Cafe La Semeuse is served in some of the finest returaunts and hotels in the country, I finally brewed a pot for the office. Without being prompted or told that this was a different coffee than they usually drink, everyone commented on the sweet, mild aroma. And after consumption? I got paged 4 times to be asked what I had just made. The answer? Cafe La Semeuse Classique. Looks like our office has a new go-to coffee. Isn’t time you ventured into the wonderful world of something new and delicious? We think so.

Coffee Ice for Iced Coffee Category: General Coffee / Tags: , / Comments Off

Yes, admittedly so I was perusing the website Perpetualkid.com when I came across a nifty little gadget especially made for iced coffee drinkers. These silicone ice cube trays in the shape of 2 inch wide beans are meant to be filled with coffee, frozen, and then dropped into your coffee! This obviously is a much needed tool for those of us who dislike watered down iced coffee, but really would like a cool treat with the arrival of this glorious spring/summer heat.
cool bean ice tray

Although you could use any ice cube tray, we think these are the tops, seeing as they’re shaped like beans. Make any kind of coffee you want. Go ahead and brew some Flavia Coffee in your Flavia Fusion Drink Station, or drip brew some Illy Medium Roast into your home pot, maybe you’re more into Americanos? In this case simply make your favorite espresso, Lavazza Super Crema, Segafredo Casa, and add the right amount of water, then freeze it! For an added chill, make extra coffee and let it sit in the refrigerator over night. You will be delightfully awakened by a chilled treat early in the day or mid-afternoon. Enjoy! Here’s the link to get these cool trays. And as always, if you want the best prices on your coffee, www.CoffeeRocket.com is the place to buy!

ez cupCoffeeRocket.com has finally added the Pod Perfect EZ-Cup to the site. At first we were a bit skeptical about the product, but after seeing its success and testing it out for ourselves, we have absolutely nothing but great things to say! To be honest, the first cup of coffee I made using the EZ-Cup came out a bit weak and I didn’t know why. So, I hosted a little experiment in the breakroom. Turns out I wasn’t filling the EZ-Cup filter with enough coffee! Here’s how it went down…

I took 2 Caribou Colombia Coffee K-Cups and cut the foil off one of the tops. I then took the entirety of coffee from the open K-Cup and placed it into the filter laying inside the EZ-Cup. I brewed the EZ-Cup as I would any other K-Cup and set it aside.
ez cup experiment

Next I brewed the regular Caribou Colombia Coffee K-Cup in its natural form. Placing the cups side by side, we grabbed one of our resident coffee lovers and asked them to do a blind taste test.

He couldn’t tell the slightest difference in taste, body, acidity, aroma, aftertaste, or mouthfeel. Identical cups of coffee!

The experiment was a success and the Pod Perfect EZ-Cup proved itself just as we had hoped it would.

side by side**Special reminder to those who share a Keurig brewer at work**
Be sure to remove your EZ-Cup when done brewing so that the next person doesn’t automatically toss it out, assuming it is a used K-Cup!

Red Espresso Iced Tea Category: Tea / Tags: , , , / Comments Off

iced-red-posterRed Espresso is one of the most underrated drinks around. It really boggles our mind at why more people aren’t regularly consuming this brilliant beverage. Red Espresso is a Rooibos tea that can be brewed like an espresso. Therefore, you have the amazing flexibility to make all sorts of espresso drinks, except you use tea!

Since summer is quickly approaching and the hot days are finally outnumbering the cold, here is a drink you are sure to enjoy–both the taste and the health benefits.

Iced Red:

“A freshly prepared natural iced tea, flavored with your choice of natural syrup. Delicious, refreshing and good for you. Enjoy straight up or choose your flavor!”

1. Make Red Espresso (you can use an espresso maker, moka pot, french press, or a drip coffee maker.) We recommend the french press for a no fuss, can’t-mess-it-up process.

2. Fill a glass to the top with ice.

3. Fill glass with cold water, leaving enough space for a double shot of red espresso.

4. Add 1 squirt flavored syrup. Peach, pomegranate, lemon or berry flavors work best. (Also, just squeezing fresh lemon juice is super good.)

5. Pour in a double shot of Red Espresso and stir to mix flavors. Garnish with mint or lemon wedge.

Get yours today at CoffeeRocket.com. Enjoy!

green mountain blueberryNot being such a huge fan of flavored coffee in general, I was skeptical when a co-worker told me how delicious Green Mountain Wild Mountain Blueberry K-Cups were. I inserted the K-Cup into our Keurig B150 Single Serve Coffee Maker, pushed the button, and walked away. About a minute later I came back into the room and it smelled like fresh blueberry muffins were in the oven. Incredible aroma on this coffee! It’s not very full in body, but I wouldn’t go as far as to call it watery. It’s easy to drink and has more the consistency of a tea instead of a thick, dark roast coffee. Green Wild Mountain Blueberry K-Cup is a medium roast with absolutely no bitterness or unpleasant aftertaste. The acidity is low, but seems necessary to mimic the actual fruit essence. The blueberry taste is as equally as bold as the aroma, a quality often lacking in flavored coffee. There’s a subtle sweetness that made me not want to add any sugar or creamer. It’s is more of a dessert coffee than something you would reach for in the early AM. This is not the type of coffee you find yourself sipping, you’re more likely to wait for it to cool down a bit and gulp it down. It’s too good to sit on the counter disappearing sip by sip. There’s no mystery why Green Wild Mountain Blueberry K-Cup is one of our best selling flavored K-Cups. Get yours today at super low prices from CoffeeRocket.com. Enjoy this hot or iced!

Today, Starbucks announced that they will be releasing two new drink sizes, the Plenta and the Micra. Whether you are looking for more or less coffee, these new sizes are sure to satisfy the needs of consumers, who were complaining that their current 3 sizes were not enough. The Plenta holds 128 oz. while the Micra holds a mere 2 oz. Now, there is something for everyone. The new sizes will be arriving this Fall.
Screen shot 2010-04-01 at 10.56.31 AM

In order to console consumers on how much waste these large new Plenta cups will create, they have suggested recycling the giant beverage cups on your own. Re-use it as a popcorn bucket! A planter! Or even a hat! The Micra on the other hand, can be used to store paper clips or as a milk dish for a kitten. How clever?!

bristot espresso pods I’ve tried a large variety of espresso pods, but the Bristot Espresso pods are definitely in my top 3. The flavor is always consistently smooth and not bitter like some other espressos. It has a nice round body and full mouthfeel; I rarely add anything, but it stands up very well to milk. The crema is fantastic on this one. It’s always thick–even on a lower end espresso machine. The rich flavor works really well for lattes and cappuccinos. This espresso definitely tastes like you ground the beans and tamped it yourself. Bristot Espresso Pods available in 18 count and 150 count at CoffeeRocket.com.

happystomachA lot of people out there have trouble digesting coffee, but maybe they just need to try a darker roasted bean.

“German and Austrian researchers said dark-roasted coffee may contain substances that reduce stomach acid…The researchers found espresso, French roast and other dark-roasted coffee contain a substance not found in raw coffee beans — N-methylpyridium — that tells the stomach to reduce the production of acid.”

This discovery is very helpful for those who have coffee sensitive bellies. Here are a few recommendations of darkly roasted beans that might be easier to stomach than what you are used to:

A couple of weeks ago, the New York Times posted an article regarding the “hip-ness” of decaf coffee. While they admit to only “drinking their decaf in the shadows,” they were overall displeased with the experience they had with the decaf coffees they tried. One of New York Times’ loyal readers wrote a response to the article. She informed them that they had better try Cafe La Semeuse Decaf coffee (one which did not appear on their tasting table), which comes in both whole bean and ground form. Cafe La Semeuse, whose slogan is “the never bitter coffee” has a booming positive reputation with its drinkers. Cafe La Semeuse coffee drinkers are lifers. Though Cafe La Semeuse is not widely available, it is however offered on www.CoffeeRocket.com where we give you great coffee for a great price. Stop on by today and try some out. You won’t be disappointed! Enjoy.

cafe la semeuse decafHere’s what the Cafe La Semeuse Decaf coffee drinking fanatic, Maralyn Hirschenbaum, had to say:

To the Editor:

Of necessity, I am a lifelong decaffeinated coffee drinker. About 20 years ago — as a result of a New York Times article praising decaf coffees — I discovered decaffeinated Café La Semeuse.

Although absolutely delicious, it is not widely available. I used to get it at Bloomingdale’s (when they had a substantial gourmet/coffee department) and then at Balducci’s (until they closed). Fortunately for me, there must be others who love it because I now find it in several of the better shops in the city.

For 20 years, I have been serving it to (and surprising, delighting — and enlightening) dinner guests. Your article said that, over all, the tasters were disappointed with the coffees.

All I can say is, do yourselves a favor — come for dinner!

Crafty Home Coffee Roasting Category: General Coffee / Tags: / Comments Off

This guy definitely wins for creative coffee roasting in our books. He has created a system to roast coffee on his kitchen stove. Just a warning, if you do roast coffee in your home, BE CAREFUL! Beans are known to fly out of the roasting device and sometimes cause fires, so please keep an eye on your “green beans.”

The great thing about roasting your own coffee is that you can pick exactly what kind of roast you want. Maybe you want a dark hearty roast like Lavazza Super Crema Espresso or perhaps you like something a bit lighter like the beans in the Flavia Coffee Breakfast Blend. Either way, enjoy your creations and share your inventions below!

home roasting

Here’s how he explains the process:

Roasting is simple. As you can see I simply stand the drill on my stove with the drum over the burner. The burner has no problem (even on low) heating the drum. I run the drill by using a pipe clamp over the trigger. I have added another large can (with the top and bottom removed) on the burner to condense the heat going up to the drum (photo below) …

I spent less than 10 bucks and thirty minutes building the drum. The drill and Dremel tool I already had. This is a simple build and very sturdy drum.

IrishCoffee

In honor of yesterday’s holiday, St. Patrick’s Day, I thought I’d post a little coffee recipe treat. This is a recipe by a man named Jim Slaughter, who claims to make the best Irish Coffee in the world. If you need and great espresso or coffee (I’d personally recommend Lavazza Super Crema Espresso) to add to this luscious treat, stop on by CoffeeRocket.com and pick some up at a discounted price. Enjoy!

The Recipe

  • One Irish Coffee glass (preferably with shamrocks and a gold rim),
failing that, any smallish glass about 5 or 6 fl. oz.
  • One long shot of good espresso
  • Two fingers of decent Irish Whiskey (Jameson or Bushmills)
  • Two tablespoons brown sugar
  • FRESH heavy cream, laced with a dollop of white sugar, beaten until it’s the consistency of custard, but not whipped to fluffiness. In Madrid they refer to this heavy thick sweet cream as “nata”.

Procedure

  1. Have everything prepared and ready before you start assembling as time is of the essence. Get your nata prepared and keep it nice and cold.
  2. Pour the whiskey and brown sugar into the Irish Whiskey glass together.
  3. Then use the espresso steamer to heat the whiskey until it is good and hot and the brown sugar is dissolved, about eight to ten seconds.

CAREFULLY put a match or lighter to the glass and flame the whiskey for a few seconds. This adds a je ne sais quoi to the flavor, and cuts down the alcohol, bringing the caffeine and alcohol into perfect balance.
