FLAVIA Coffee is Now ALTERRA COFFEE ROASTERS

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

FLAVIA COFFEE has been around for quite some time now. As one of the original forerunners in single serve coffee, they set a high standard for delicious, easy-to-use, minimally wasting singles serve brands. Though, one of the longest ongoing complaints regarding FLAVIA Coffee has been their lack of diversity among flavors. This became especially apparent when Keurig K-Cups filtered in choice by the hundreds. With over 100 different kinds of K-Cups, FLAVIA Coffee customers started feeling left out. With a “quality over quantity” attitude, it was only a matter of time before people started to question that too.

Now, MARS drinks has pulled back the reigns on FLAVIA Coffee and has brought in ALTERRA COFFEE ROASTERS. This means MARS drinks is now using the Flavia brand for its single cup coffee machinery, while ALTERRA COFFEE ROASTERS will take over the actual packets of coffee going into the machines.

Do not fear the new ALTERRA COFFEE ROASTERS changeover. Though we were skeptical at first, ALTERRA COFFEE ROASTERS far surpasses anything we could have hoped for in the coffee department. And while the price of each packet may be higher than the original FLAVIA, you are paying for a better quality cup–a quality we are not used to seeing in this kind of market. Above and beyond expectations! Now there’s a change we are looking forward to!

Flavia Coffee Espresso Roast Review

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

new_flavia_espresso_200Flavia Coffee is one of the few single serve brands left that hasn’t given into expanding their product line. While this may seem like a downside to the company, they definitely earn their credit for creating a great product and sticking to it. One of the staples in the Flavia Coffee lineup is their Flavia Coffee Espresso Roast. With a stronger (rather than mild) flavor profile, this cup of espresso will certainly hold its taste with the addition of milk and sugar. Using a Flavia Fusion Drink Station Deluxe does not provide as much crema as typically desired, but the Flavia Coffee Espresso Roast is a great base for their cappuccino drinks that can be made by first adding a Flavia Cappuccino/Latte Swirl pack.

The aroma is hearty and earthy. The body isn’t as heavy as I would normally expect from an espresso, but the bitterness is low. This cup has a bit more acidity than normal as well, and you can really taste the deeply roasted beans. In addition, the aftertaste isn’t very potent, which is something I very much enjoy in a cup of coffee.

All in all, the espresso for Flavia coffee is a decent cup, but it may be better when used with the Cappuccino/Latte swirl pack to create a cappuccino. Enjoy your drink no matter how you take it and buy your Flavia coffee at discounted prices online Enjoy!

Flavia Coffee Costa Rica Review

Monday, March 1st, 2010

FLAFCR-2After placing the Flavia Coffee brew pack in your single cup coffee maker, probably a Flavia Fusion Deluxe Drink Station if you are at home, you can take out the pack after the seal has been pierced and really smell the coffee grinds. The scent is sweet and strong, which is a great indication of freshness. Upon brewing the Flavia Coffee pack into your mug, the aroma smells of sugared almonds with slight earthy notes, like those from a tropical woodsy area.

This coffee is a medium to dark roast for sure and you won’t have to look at the package to know that. The rich chocolately color is lighter than the Flavia Coffee espresso, but much darker than a traditional breakfast blend, which by the way, Flavia Coffee makes an excellent one.

flavia coffee costa ricaAfter slurping the first sip, the Flavia Coffee Costa Rica pack has a wonderfully thick mouth-feel. It’s not watery at all and feels like a hearty cup of coffee.  It’s smooth taste deliveres what you would hope for after smelling the aroma. It is sweet with balanced acidity that makes it full-bodied without tasting like burnt beans, but absolutely no bitterness is present. This Flavia Coffee is A+ in my book. I will not be adding cream or sugar. Flavia Coffee Costa Rica packs are one of the few coffees I always enjoy black. Pick some up at CoffeeRocket.com at a great price. Enjoy!

Flavia Coffee’s Brighter Tomorrow Program at Origin

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

flavia coffee brighter tomorrowThough Flavia Coffee may not have the widest selection of products, they have still managed to stand out in the world of single cup coffee. Flavia Coffee is one of the few, if not only, single cup coffee manufacturers to invest so heavily in sustainability and green practices. In addition to the Terracycle Program they partake in (more info here), Flavia Coffee started the Brighter Tomorrow at Origin Program.

Flavia Coffee helps the exact co-operative and farms in the Kiambu district of Kenya that produce the coffee for their Flavia Kenya brand. By restoring coffee drying tables and rehabilitating wet mills, Flavia Coffee helps Kenya produce more quality beans, which in turn allows the farmers to collect a greater profit for their product.

By drinking Flavia Kenya Coffee you help support 2500 farmers. Not too shabby for pressing a button on your Flavia Fusion Drink Station.

Flavia Coffee: How They Seal Flavia Filter Packs

Friday, January 8th, 2010

When you look at a Flavia Coffee Fresh Pack it’s a common misconception as to how they seal the bottom. The Keurig K-Cup, as well as the Nescafe Dolce Gusto Capusle, and Tassimo TDISCs all have pressed foil seals that are pierced by a metal wand. Not Flavia Coffee, though. They take different approach to single serve coffee packaging. When we went to Mars Drink School to learn about Flavia Coffee: Tree to Cup, we took a walk-thru tour of Flavia Coffee’s manufacturing plant. Besides being absolutely spotlessly clean, we got to see the packs filled and sealed. The bottom, which many people incorrectly perceive as being “glued together” is hermetically sealed using heat. This machine looks pretty close to the one that they used in the Mars Flavia Coffee manufacturing plant. It seals about 120 packs per minute. So you can imagine how many they are sealing a day! They also have a bunch of these, so they are really moving product quickly. With a motto like “Source, Seal, Serve” you can really see the rush they have to deliver you the freshest coffee possible. And as always, you can pick up Flavia Coffee for the lowest prices at www.CoffeeRocket.com.

Coffee- Tree to Cup: Learning about Flavia Coffee at Mars Drink School

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Flavia Coffee, owned by Mars, provides a Mars Drink School for people in the industry who are interested in further education about the Flavia Coffee product. During the Mars Drink School a small group of us learned all about cupping, the manufacturing of Flavia Coffee fresh packs, and general single serve cup coffee knowledge. More specifically, how coffee goes from “tree to cup”. One of the more interesting things that people don’t often think about are how many people are involved in helping produce a single cup of coffee. Coffee passes through about 15-20 hands before you actually drink it. How is this possible? Well, here are the steps it takes for coffee to go from tree to cup.

  1. The bean must be planted and grow into a tree
  2. Ripened coffee cherries are picked by hand
  3. The cherries are then processed in either a wet or dry method
  4. The beans are then sorted by size & grade, then shipped
  5. The beans must be blended
  6. Beans are roasted to specific degrees
  7. Beans are then packaged & shipped
  8. Finally, beans are brewed.

So, even though the entire process is only listed in 8 steps, you can imagine how much time each step takes and how many people are involved in each part of the process. Think about that the next time you drink a cup of coffee. It took a lot to get it to you!

Inside a Flavia Coffee Filter Pack

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

flavia filter pack diagramFlavia Coffee manufactured its first filter back in 1982 and although the accompanying single serve coffee machines wouldn’t appear until much later, the simplicity of the Flavia Coffee filter pack has kept it popular for decades. Maybe you’ve cut your pack open to see for yourself. Or perhaps you’re just curious to check it out diagram style. Well, here it is.

Each time the water runs through the pack it ensures that there is absolutely no cross flavor contamination. So, every cup is just as fresh and perfect as the one before. This single serve pack also produces the least amount of waste in the single cup coffee world besides coffee pods. Simplicity is key with Flavia Coffee and you can taste it in the pure pleasure it brings with every cup.

Are Flavia Coffee Filter Packs Recyclable?

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

One of the few problems with owning a single cup coffee maker is the ever concerning amount of waste produced by these products. Few, if not none, of the companies manufacturing single serving coffee cups have figured out a way to make their capsules/cartridges/TDISCs/K-Cups etc. recyclable.

So, has Flavia found a way to make a “green come true”?

Yes, and no. Rather than REcycling, Flavia Coffee has begun participating in UPcycling. What is upcycling, you ask? Well, it’s the “art” of turning trash into usable products. And the company TerraCycle.net is on a huge mission to help save the world, one bag of trash at a time.

The company forms brigades. People collect a certain item and some of the items even have a payout of about 2 cents per item- i.e 2 cents for every Lays potato chip bag that you contribute to the Lays’s chip brigade. Some of the products are really neat.

While there are no products for sale as of yet that have been created from Flavia brew packs, TerraCycle assures us that they are coming soon. Just as soon as they collect enough of these packs. Join the cause today and turn your trash into wearable treasure!Flavia terracycle style
