Coffee- Tree to Cup: Learning about Flavia Coffee at Mars Drink School

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Flavia Coffee, owned by Mars, provides a Mars Drink School for people in the industry who are interested in further education about the Flavia Coffee product. During the Mars Drink School a small group of us learned all about cupping, the manufacturing of Flavia Coffee fresh packs, and general single serve cup coffee knowledge. More specifically, how coffee goes from “tree to cup”. One of the more interesting things that people don’t often think about are how many people are involved in helping produce a single cup of coffee. Coffee passes through about 15-20 hands before you actually drink it. How is this possible? Well, here are the steps it takes for coffee to go from tree to cup.

  1. The bean must be planted and grow into a tree
  2. Ripened coffee cherries are picked by hand
  3. The cherries are then processed in either a wet or dry method
  4. The beans are then sorted by size & grade, then shipped
  5. The beans must be blended
  6. Beans are roasted to specific degrees
  7. Beans are then packaged & shipped
  8. Finally, beans are brewed.

So, even though the entire process is only listed in 8 steps, you can imagine how much time each step takes and how many people are involved in each part of the process. Think about that the next time you drink a cup of coffee. It took a lot to get it to you!

Europe gets new Nescafe Dolce Gusto Machine

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Nescafe_Dolce_Gusto-thumb-450x359Clearly when it comes to new single serve coffee updates/products/machines, Europe gets the goodies long before they make their way ‘cross the Atlantic. But within the past month, pictures have risen to the surface of what the new Nescafe Dolce Gusto single serve coffee makers will look like. This newbie has a futuristic, modern appeal with the same great features of the already popular Nescafe Dolce Gusto single serve coffee maker. The new machines are still compatible with Dolce Gusto Capsules and now in addition to looking forward to receiving one of these circular single serve coffee makers, we hope Nescafe Dolce Gusto expands their line of capsules. Yes, the Dolce Gusto capsules are terrific as is, but in this market of single serve coffee variety is king.

Tassimo by Bosch Takes Part In TerraCycle Program

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Tassimo TerracycleTassimo by Bosch and TDISCs by Kraft are gladly a new addition to the single serve coffee manufacturers stepping up to take a bigger part in environmental sustainability. Tassimo by Bosch is now participating in TerraCycle. Recently, we divulged one of Flavia Coffee’s “green” initiatives by featuring their participation in Upcycling their fresh brew packs. Now, we can add Tassimo to the list of contenders for responsible single serve coffee manufacturers.

If you are a user of the Tassimo Hot Beverage System by Bosch, then you certainly know the pangs of throwing away so much waste incurred by used TDISCs. In order to participate in the program, the end consumer needs to spot a small fee to receive a TDISC/Terracycle disposal box, in which the used TDISCs as well as the foil packaging the TDISC boxes come in are Upcycled into products. Currently, this Tassimo single serve coffee Upcycle program is only recognized in the UK. But, we have faith that it will be sooner rather than later we will see Tassimo and Terracycle pair up in the United States as well. Here’s hoping!

Inside a Flavia Coffee Filter Pack

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

flavia filter pack diagramFlavia Coffee manufactured its first filter back in 1982 and although the accompanying single serve coffee machines wouldn’t appear until much later, the simplicity of the Flavia Coffee filter pack has kept it popular for decades. Maybe you’ve cut your pack open to see for yourself. Or perhaps you’re just curious to check it out diagram style. Well, here it is.

Each time the water runs through the pack it ensures that there is absolutely no cross flavor contamination. So, every cup is just as fresh and perfect as the one before. This single serve pack also produces the least amount of waste in the single cup coffee world besides coffee pods. Simplicity is key with Flavia Coffee and you can taste it in the pure pleasure it brings with every cup.

Are Flavia Coffee Filter Packs Recyclable?

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

One of the few problems with owning a single cup coffee maker is the ever concerning amount of waste produced by these products. Few, if not none, of the companies manufacturing single serving coffee cups have figured out a way to make their capsules/cartridges/TDISCs/K-Cups etc. recyclable.

So, has Flavia found a way to make a “green come true”?

Yes, and no. Rather than REcycling, Flavia Coffee has begun participating in UPcycling. What is upcycling, you ask? Well, it’s the “art” of turning trash into usable products. And the company TerraCycle.net is on a huge mission to help save the world, one bag of trash at a time.

The company forms brigades. People collect a certain item and some of the items even have a payout of about 2 cents per item- i.e 2 cents for every Lays potato chip bag that you contribute to the Lays’s chip brigade. Some of the products are really neat.

While there are no products for sale as of yet that have been created from Flavia brew packs, TerraCycle assures us that they are coming soon. Just as soon as they collect enough of these packs. Join the cause today and turn your trash into wearable treasure!Flavia terracycle style

Inside of a K-Cup

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Although it may seem self-explanatory, I still found it interesting to know what the inside of a K-cup looked like and exactly how it worked. That’s when I found this nifty little diagram and thought I would pass along the information. Now, while your futuristic, Keurig, personal coffee maker is brewing your favorite blend, you know what’s going on in there!

inside a k cup“First lets explain the actual make up of the K cup and what makes it unique. The K cup is a plastic container that is more complex than it actually looks at first glance. In side plastic cup is first placed an oxygen, light and humidity barrier that wraps the inner side-wall of the cup. This barrier plays an important role in maintaining the freshness of the coffee. Next a sophisticated coffee filter is placed inside of the barrier. This filter helps control the water pressure and ensures ideal extraction time. Now the premeasured freshly ground coffee is placed and packed tightly into the filter. The plastic cup is then sealed with an airtight foil lid that locks in the freshness and taste of the coffee. This patented technology can maintain the coffee freshness and ensure a quality cup for more than six months.”

After this knowledge and assuming the each single cup coffee beverage works in some sort of similar matter, why do you think K-cups are the most popular way to enjoy individual beverages over TDISCs, Flavia brew packs, and pods? I think it’s all those flashy foil lids with pretty pictures, but if you have a better idea- tell me!

Attention: Calling all (Coffee) Pod People

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

coffeepodsPods seem to be the one kind of single cup coffee that gets the least amount of press. Why could that be? There’s a huge range of coffees to choose from and machines such as the Cafe Xpress or the Melitta One Single Serve Coffee Maker are inexpensive and still brew a satisfying cup of coffee. Well, it’s time to change the negative image on pods. So we decided to give a little credit where deserved, and the results are in! Following the spirit of our “Top 10” Lists this month we have taken a look around and discovered the top ten selling single serve coffee pods. So for all you pod people, this blog is dedicated to you.

10. Wolfgang Puck Reserve Decaf – Wolfgang’s secret blended medium roast recipe yields a full-bodied cup with chocolate notes minus the caffeine.

9.  Melitta One Vanilla Haze- The perfect combination of sweet vanilla cream enhanced with the flavor of warm toasted hazelnuts.

8.  Melitta One Home for the Holidays- A cozy blend of creamy vanilla, fluffy white coconut, buttery caramel and sweet nuts.

7.  Melitta One Skip the Buzz – Premium 100% Colombian coffee is roasted to perfection to deliver a satisfying, full-bodied taste without the caffeine.

6.  Melitta One Parisian Café Blend – A delightfully smooth dark roast coffee with deep full flavor and smokey overtones.

5.  Melitta One A Café Kind of Day- 100% Colombian brew delivers a subtle, wine-like overtone from daybreak to nightfall.

4.  Wolfgang Puck Espresso Dark-A bold, Italian-style roast creates an espresso with body and character.

3.  Melitta One Love at First Sip – Premium blend of Central and South American coffees, medium-roasted to deliver a bright, full-flavored breakfast blend with a finish so smooth, you just might start blushing.

2.  Melitta One Buzzworthy- A choice blend of Central and South American coffees, buzzworthy is dark-roasted for an intense aroma and a flavor that’s full bodied with smoky overtones.

1.  Wolfgang Puck Reserve-Wolfgang’s secret blended medium roast recipe yields a full-bodied cup with chocolate notes.

Yes, the two most popular brands seem to be Wolfgang Puck and Melitta One Universal Pods. Although, don’t you fear pod-lovers. Pods are also manufactured by Timothy’s Coffee, Senseo, Reunion Island, Java One, and Organa Tea Pods. Another great feature of pods is the variety of machines they are able to work in. For example, K-cups are only compatible with Keurigs, TDISCs with Tassimos, Flavia brew packs with Flavia Drink Stations…you get the idea. But, pods are universal to all other pod machines. Is this a miracle? No! It’s just the simplicity of pod shapes. In addition, pod brewers start at a much lower price than any other single cup coffee machine. So if you are wary about entering the world of single serve coffee, here’s your chance to break in without investing a fortune. What are you waiting for?

Timothy’s Coffee Releases Kahlúa Original K-Cups

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

kahluaA liqueur that tastes like coffee…a coffee that tastes like a liqueur…Kahlúa’s driving people all sorts of loco with their new adventure into the coffee world. A little less than a month ago, Timothy’s World Coffee banned together with Kahlúa to produce the new Kahlúa Original K-Cup. Like any naturally curious person, surely you must be wondering if after consuming a couple cups of this new coffee whether or not you’ll be slurring your words and falling off your desk chair? If your hopes were high then I’m sorry to report: no, there is no alcohol in this beverage.

Boasting a heavy aroma and a taste full of notes such as rum, vanilla, and caramel, this coffee certainly set itself up for its consumers to have extremely high expectations. At a close nose-to-cup encounter it smells like butterscotch syrup and tastes pretty close to that same aroma. A full-bodied cup crafted only out of the finest Arabica beans leaves a pleasurable, sweet aftertaste. Actually, adding sugar to the cup didn’t do anything to enhance the flavor; it’s pretty tasty all on its own.

Overall, it’s not exactly what you’d imagine Kahlúa to taste like in coffee form, but as a new Timothy’s K-Cup it definitely hits the spot. A great new addition such as this one to the land of flavored coffees makes me wonder who will be the next single serve coffee packaging manufacturer to capitalize on this intelligent crossover between two heavenly/guilty pleasures. Try this as an iced coffee. Delish! Available now at extraordinary low prices on www.CoffeeRocket.com.

What single cup coffee maker should you buy your college student?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

As college students leave the “comfort” of their dorm room to make the seasonal pilgrimage back to their respective hometowns for Thanksgiving/Winter break, parents eagerly await their return. Though the stress of finding the perfect gift for the holiday season can become overwhelming, there is something that parents can buy for their college student that is useful, convenient, and fun. A single cup coffee maker, of course.

Not only does a personal brew machine save them enormous amounts of time and money (see article on how much money you can save by making coffee at home), but it is also the gift that will make you a hero. All those late night study sessions followed by early morning classes are much easier to face and get through with a jolt of java close by. No longer will they have to wait in lengthy lines and stress about being late to class. And let’s face it, taking as much stress off a college student as possible is always helpful and appreciated.

So, which single cup coffee maker should you buy? Well, here are a few of the top choices.  (Keeping in mind specific dorm room restrictions, which vary from school to school.)

flavia fusion drink stationFlavia Fusion Drink Station: This single cup coffee maker is an entire drink station. Within minutes you can create cappuccions, chococcinos, hot chocolate, a bevy of teas…etc. The maker is only compatible with fresh packs, which contain single servings of each beverage. It’s extremely quiet, efficient, and narrow in design. Although this is the most expensive option on the list, (around $125) it’s for a reason. Even after school is over, your student will enjoy waking up every day to make a fresh, quick, personalized cup of coffee for years to come.

keurig-b30-and-keurig-b70Keurig Mini Personal Brewer: A compact single serve coffee cup maker that comes in 3 colors. The great thing about a machine like this is that it is so clean and convenient, no need to deal with messy filters or measuring out ground coffee. Although the maker is only compatible with K-Cups, there are over 200 varieties/flavors offered and the selection is always growing.  It makes a cup of coffee in under 3 minutes.

Thinking more long-term though, it may be better to purchase the slightly bigger brewer, the B40. It’s only slightly more expensive, but with a 48 oz water reservoir, it doesn’t have to be refilled for every cup–a very adult machine that will last long after college. B30 is about $90 while the B40 is only around $100.

black n decker brew n goBlack & Decker Brew ‘n Go Personal Coffeemaker: After filling the mug with water and pouring it into the water tank, it only takes a filter, ground coffee, and about 3 minutes before a fresh cup of coffee is brewed, drip-style, into it’s accompanying travel mug. The prices runs around $20 and comes with a nifty stainless mug.

french pressFrench Press: If coffee makers are strictly prohibited, perhaps a more kettle-like maker would be able to pass for approval. This easy-to-use method is preferred by coffee experts as the best way to prepare a cup of coffee. It’s simple enough to use and can be found very cheap—around $25. It takes ground coffee, so your student could fill it with whatever ground coffee they find at the local market.

melitta ready set joe to goMelitta Ready, Set, Joe Travel Mug: This old school single cup maker literally is just a funnel on top of a cup. It’s as basic as you can get for making a cup of coffee. Inside the funnel goes your filter and ground coffee. After pouring hot water over the grounds, you have a fresh brewed cup of coffee. This maker is about $7, but you’d still need to find a way to heat the water.

Tassimo Releases T-65 as an Upgraded Version of the T-45 Now Available at CoffeeRocket.com

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Tassimo_T65BrewerWith an already successful response to their upgraded Tassimo T-45 coffee machine model after a change in manufactures, Tassimo decided they were ready for an even further upgrade. This month they released the T-65, which is very similar to the T-45, but includes a couple new features that will allow them to break into more diverse markets.

Beginning with a new LCD screen above the already familiar start button, the new multi-lingual (English/German/French/Italian/Spanish) feature will allow Tassimo to distribute product in new areas without having to add specifications in order to localize each machine. An innovative and futuristic marketing plan, they are creating a supply for a demand that’s quickly approaching. The screen displays digital step-by-step instructions or reminds the user that it’s time to refill the water tank. Overall, a useful feature for the first time user who doesn’t know where or when to insert the T-Disc.

In addition, they have also added three bright lights directly below the brewer to illuminate the drink being made. It’s a small feature, but in a dimly lit room it gets quite a reaction.

Although the T-65 is very similar to its predecessor, the T-45, its new additions prepare Tassimo for extraordinary success in building a bigger market segment. Good luck to them. We’re always looking forward to new features and upgrades. Available now at CoffeeRocket.com.

Tasting the New Green Mountain Donut House Collection

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

As soon as I walked back to my desk with the 4 cups of freshly brewed coffee, everyone that passed kept asking what smelled so good. The coffee filled the air with the delicious smell of baked goods. Yum.

All 4 of these are seriously winners. The Donut House Extra Bold in regular and Decaf is very strong in aroma and slightly mellow in taste. There is a pleasing full-bodied mouth feel, not at all watery, but not too syrupy. It’s low in acidity and virtually has no aftertaste.  If I were to add some cream and sugar to this it could possibly replace my current daily blend.

The Chocolate Glazed Donut smells so delicious. It starts with a nice medium roasted coffee flavor and ends with a chocolatey aftertaste. It’s fragrant enough that it would satisfy a sweet tooth craving if I just let it sit near me–possibly a great new dieting trick! It’s a bit more watery than the extra bold upon first consumption, but it grows in body as it reaches the back of your mouth. The flavor is intensely satisfying and with the coffee’s catch phrase of “All coffee, no crumbs” it’s sure to be one of the more popular flavors in the K-cup line very soon.

Cinnamon Roll’s vanilla and cinnamon scent perfumes the air and immediately challenges your mouth to try and deny taking a sip. This coffee definitely has the same bold coffee flavor as the Donut House Extra Bold, but the cinnamon roll flavor does not overpower nor get lost in the blend. It’s a tad bitter, but nothing that would stop me from consuming the rest of the cup.  A subtle sweetness stays with you even after you’ve finished it; this coffee will certainly have you returning for seconds.

Overall, if I didn’t already have a Keurig, I would invest in one just to be able to indulge myself with these delicious flavors. Although Green Mountain has disappointed me with a few of their other flavors, I commend them for their successful ability to bring the feeling of baked goods and a donut shop into a cup of coffee. Touché, Green Mountain!
