How to Keep Your Coffee Fresh

Friday, November 20th, 2009

If you haven’t been converted yet by the wonders and ease of using a single cup coffee maker, then you are still at home with your drip coffee or French press. So how do you keep your ground coffee or whole coffee beans fresh if you’re not receiving them in prepackaged pods? Having the freshest coffee available is one of the cardinal rules to enjoying a good cup of coffee, so how should you go about this?

Now if you are economically responsible and trying to save a bit of cash in this ever-uncertain recession then you’re probably buying your coffee in bulk. There is nothing wrong with this, but you should be sure to use the entire bag within a 3-4 week period. If you do plan on storing your coffee make sure that you put it in an air tight container where it cannot be reached by moisture or heat and keep in a dark spot. Ground coffee becomes stale a lot quicker than the full beans since more surface area is exposed to the natural elements that alter the chemicals inside the beans. The best advice would be to buy whole beans and grind them as you need them.

If you plan on freezing your beans or grinds, realize that the flavor will be weaker when you defrost them since eliminating condensation altogether is almost impossible. Just be careful: if you freeze your beans, let them defrost for 4 hours or more before grinding them up or else you put your grinder at risk to break and the blades to dull quickly.

Green Mountain has just announced that they are taking over Timothy’s World Coffee for the price of approximately $157 million USD. Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Next time you’re enjoying a cup of java with your friends, be sure to drop some of this coffee knowledge on them. It’s interesting and impressive!

  1. Coffee is actually picked off trees in the forms of red berries. Inside the berries lie the beans, usually 2, called pips.
  2. Coffee is the second most popular drink in the world; water is the first.
  3. Coffee is the second most widely traded commodity in the world; oil is the first.
  4. The majority of coffee growers only earn 4 cents for every pound they harvest.
  5. Worldwide there are more than 1400 million cups of coffee consumed every day.
  6. In 1675 Charles II, King of England issued a proclamation banning Coffee Houses. He said that they were places where people met to plot against him.
  7. Dark roasts have less caffeine than light roasts. A large part of the caffeine is burned off during longer roasting times.
  8. Coffee increases the effectiveness of painkillers.
  9. It takes about 40 coffee beans to make a cup of espresso.
  10. Black Coffee has zero calories and no sugar.

Pretty good stuff…eh?

Timothy’s Coffee Releases Kahlúa Original K-Cups

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

kahluaA liqueur that tastes like coffee…a coffee that tastes like a liqueur…Kahlúa’s driving people all sorts of loco with their new adventure into the coffee world. A little less than a month ago, Timothy’s World Coffee banned together with Kahlúa to produce the new Kahlúa Original K-Cup. Like any naturally curious person, surely you must be wondering if after consuming a couple cups of this new coffee whether or not you’ll be slurring your words and falling off your desk chair? If your hopes were high then I’m sorry to report: no, there is no alcohol in this beverage.

Boasting a heavy aroma and a taste full of notes such as rum, vanilla, and caramel, this coffee certainly set itself up for its consumers to have extremely high expectations. At a close nose-to-cup encounter it smells like butterscotch syrup and tastes pretty close to that same aroma. A full-bodied cup crafted only out of the finest Arabica beans leaves a pleasurable, sweet aftertaste. Actually, adding sugar to the cup didn’t do anything to enhance the flavor; it’s pretty tasty all on its own.

Overall, it’s not exactly what you’d imagine Kahlúa to taste like in coffee form, but as a new Timothy’s K-Cup it definitely hits the spot. A great new addition such as this one to the land of flavored coffees makes me wonder who will be the next single serve coffee packaging manufacturer to capitalize on this intelligent crossover between two heavenly/guilty pleasures. Try this as an iced coffee. Delish! Available now at extraordinary low prices on www.CoffeeRocket.com.

Arabica vs. Robusta

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Arabica vs. Robusta EspressoDid you know that there are over 25 different types of coffee? But in our reality we only need to be concerned with the 2 that are most popular, Arabica and Robusta. Have you ever wondered what the difference is between these two? Why does it matter if something is 100% Arabica? Does that make it better?

Many coffee drinkers already know the answer to this question, but just in case you were wondering…yes, Arabica gets much more respect than Robusta for the most part. In the land of American coffee snobbery, anything less that 100% Arabica isn’t even a cup of coffee. (The French and Italians often prefer a combination blend.)

Arabica makes up for 75-80% of all coffee produced in the world even though it’s much more difficult to grow than Robusta.  Therefore, this results in a higher price for the consumer. It takes about 4-5 years for an Arabica tree to first produce a crop, while Robusta only takes around 2-3 years.

One of the interesting  ‘perks’ to Robusta is its surpassing amount of caffeine in comparison to its delicate rival. For this reason, Robusta is often used in espresso, not only because of it’s speedy effects, but also because it produces a sufficiently better amount of crema on top of a brewed espresso.  Mostly used for instant coffees and espressos, Robusta has its place in the world, but for a truly great cup of coffee with a full bodied taste, definitely grab the Arabica beans and get to grinding.
