Savor the flavor-ings: How they flavor coffee

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

flavored coffeeHave you ever wondered how they infuse the deliciousness of nuts, berries, chocolates, and spices into those pretty little beans? Even more so, how do they create “natural” flavors such as Blueberry Cobbler or Pumpkin Pie?

As much as coffee companies would like you to think the flavoring process is 100% natural, that’s not always the truth. In some cases, fresh spices like are added during the grinding process, but for most cases, it’s often a combination of quite a few ingredients, some natural, some not, which create the final cup of flavored java.

Flavorings, both natural and artificial (i.e chemicals) are sprayed onto the beans in liquid form during the roasting process. The chemical concoctions developed by chemists, (who else?) sometimes include over 100 different chemical ingredients to reproduce novelty flavors. The additives are then dried off of the beans using water or alcohol to help the oils evaporate quicker. After, the beans are sold in whole form or ground up and packaged. The only problem that seems to commonly arise with flavored coffee is that the flavors tend to mask the authentic coffee flavor desired by so many. Unfortunately, some unreputable brands use strong flavor additives to cover up their beans that are often lower in quality than advertised.

All in all, you are better off picking up the best coffee you can afford and then adding a flavored syrup. This way you have the quality bean AND the flavor you want.

A super amazing combination is any homemade latte with a squirt of Da Vinci’s French Vanilla syrup. It’s so much more economical than going to a coffee house and you can control exactly how much Vanilla flavor you want. Win-win! Check out the great Da Vinci prices over at CoffeeRocket.com to start making your own flavored beverages at home. Yum.

CoffeeRocket.com also has the pleasure of being one of the first e-commerce sites selling Melitta’s wonderful new European-inspired line besides the creators, www.Melitta.com. Hello, exclusivity! The six new roasts are available in: 2 medium roasts, Classique Supreme and Blanc et Noir; a dark roast, Vienna Roast; a decaf, Riviera Sunset; and 2 flavored coffees, Hazelnut Crème Brulee and Parisian Vanilla. Tasting the New Green Mountain Donut House Collection

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

As soon as I walked back to my desk with the 4 cups of freshly brewed coffee, everyone that passed kept asking what smelled so good. The coffee filled the air with the delicious smell of baked goods. Yum.

All 4 of these are seriously winners. The Donut House Extra Bold in regular and Decaf is very strong in aroma and slightly mellow in taste. There is a pleasing full-bodied mouth feel, not at all watery, but not too syrupy. It’s low in acidity and virtually has no aftertaste.  If I were to add some cream and sugar to this it could possibly replace my current daily blend.

The Chocolate Glazed Donut smells so delicious. It starts with a nice medium roasted coffee flavor and ends with a chocolatey aftertaste. It’s fragrant enough that it would satisfy a sweet tooth craving if I just let it sit near me–possibly a great new dieting trick! It’s a bit more watery than the extra bold upon first consumption, but it grows in body as it reaches the back of your mouth. The flavor is intensely satisfying and with the coffee’s catch phrase of “All coffee, no crumbs” it’s sure to be one of the more popular flavors in the K-cup line very soon.

Cinnamon Roll’s vanilla and cinnamon scent perfumes the air and immediately challenges your mouth to try and deny taking a sip. This coffee definitely has the same bold coffee flavor as the Donut House Extra Bold, but the cinnamon roll flavor does not overpower nor get lost in the blend. It’s a tad bitter, but nothing that would stop me from consuming the rest of the cup.  A subtle sweetness stays with you even after you’ve finished it; this coffee will certainly have you returning for seconds.

Overall, if I didn’t already have a Keurig, I would invest in one just to be able to indulge myself with these delicious flavors. Although Green Mountain has disappointed me with a few of their other flavors, I commend them for their successful ability to bring the feeling of baked goods and a donut shop into a cup of coffee. Touché, Green Mountain!
