Coffee- Tree to Cup: Learning about Flavia Coffee at Mars Drink School

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Flavia Coffee, owned by Mars, provides a Mars Drink School for people in the industry who are interested in further education about the Flavia Coffee product. During the Mars Drink School a small group of us learned all about cupping, the manufacturing of Flavia Coffee fresh packs, and general single serve cup coffee knowledge. More specifically, how coffee goes from “tree to cup”. One of the more interesting things that people don’t often think about are how many people are involved in helping produce a single cup of coffee. Coffee passes through about 15-20 hands before you actually drink it. How is this possible? Well, here are the steps it takes for coffee to go from tree to cup.

  1. The bean must be planted and grow into a tree
  2. Ripened coffee cherries are picked by hand
  3. The cherries are then processed in either a wet or dry method
  4. The beans are then sorted by size & grade, then shipped
  5. The beans must be blended
  6. Beans are roasted to specific degrees
  7. Beans are then packaged & shipped
  8. Finally, beans are brewed.

So, even though the entire process is only listed in 8 steps, you can imagine how much time each step takes and how many people are involved in each part of the process. Think about that the next time you drink a cup of coffee. It took a lot to get it to you!
